“Robotics is a stack of hard problems glued together.” Look closely at that stack: control, estimation, planning, perception, manipulation, safety. Almost all of these systems are developed, tested, and validated in simulation long before a robot ever reaches the real world. Simulation is where systems are stressed, failures are contained, sensors are intentionally made imperfect, and edge cases are explored without risking hardware or people. But simulation is often misunderstood. There’s a common assumption that if something works well in a virtual environment, it should work just as well outside it. In reality, small mismatches in physics, sensors, timing, or environment structure add up across the stack. What looks stable in simulation can turn brittle surprisingly fast in the real world. Simulation reveals problems. Execution determines whether they get resolved. That distinction has been shaping how we think about what needs to exist next.
