Posted on on behalf of NOAA: Please be advised that NOAA is extending the voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) request for the Southern California VSR zone through January 15, 2026 due to the continued presence of endangered whales.

The below attached are sent on behalf of the Harbor Safety Committee (HSC) National Steering Team (NST), U.S. Coast Guard, and host HSC (Puget Sound Harbor Safety Committee).

Per USCG: CG will establish Safety Zone in the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor for the “2025 Cars & Stripes Forever Fireworks display” on JUNE 27th, 2025, from 8:30PM to 10:00PM in position 33.744450, -118.274184 – from a barge. See location photo below.

Per NOAA: ~100 ESA-listed humpback whales around Santa Barbara Channel shipping lanes. Pls communicate to your vessels keep careful watch, exercise caution, & maintain reduced speeds in these areas. NOAA voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) requests 5/1-12/31. see Chart & Map.

On behalf of NOAA: Announcing the 2025 NOAA voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) requests effective 5/1-12/31/2025 to reduce the risk of ship strikes on endangered whales, reduce ocean noise, and protect public health along the California coast.
