Your predictable remarks on the Middle East are not balanced diplomacy - they are a textbook example of moral equivalence that rewards terrorists and punishes the victim. Hezbollah, the Iranian proxy whose explicit goal is the destruction of Israel, chose this war. On 8 October 2023 it opened a second front with thousands of rockets, anti-tank missiles and infiltration attempts, deliberately dragging a reluctant Lebanon into conflict, displacing 60,000 Israelis from their homes and killing civilians for 18 months. UN Resolution 1701 - which demands Hezbollah withdraw north of the Litani - has been violated daily for years. Israel’s campaign is not “disproportionate and indiscriminate”; it is a measured, necessary operation to restore deterrence and security after repeated aggression. Civilian suffering is tragic, but the primary responsibility lies with Hezbollah, which systematically embeds its military infrastructure inside Lebanese villages and civilian homes. Equating the aggressor with the defender is not “concern”. It is a dangerous inversion of cause and effect. The first direct Israeli-Lebanese dialogue in decades only became possible because Israel demonstrated it will no longer accept a terrorist army on its border. True safety for both peoples requires Hezbollah’s disarmament and Iran’s isolation - not more Israeli restraint. On the situation you label “Palestine”: the daily deterioration began on 7 October 2023 with the massacre of 1,200 Israelis, rapes, burnings and the taking of 251 hostages - crimes still celebrated by Hamas, Islamic Jihad and much of the Palestinian leadership. Settlement expansion and occasional settler violence are serious issues that Israel investigates and condemns. But they are not the root cause. The root cause is the Palestinian rejectionist ideology that refuses to accept a Jewish state in any borders, pays terrorists through the “pay-for-slay” system, and teaches children that martyrdom is the highest honour. Israel has offered generous peace deals (2000, 2008, 2020 Abraham Accords framework) only to be met with rejection and terror. The new death-penalty legislation targets the worst mass-murdering terrorists - the same standard many democracies apply to the most heinous crimes. Demanding the partial suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement over “values” while the Palestinian Authority and Hamas openly glorify October 7 is a grotesque inversion of those very values. Belgium and the EU cannot claim to uphold international law and human rights while applying a standard to Israel that is not applied to any other democracy fighting for survival. You do not call for suspending agreements with Qatar (Hamas financier), Turkey (Hamas host), or Iran (Hezbollah paymaster). Selective outrage against the Middle East’s only liberal democracy does not bring peace - it emboldens jihadists and deepens the very conflict you claim to deplore. If the EU genuinely wants security, prosperity and stability - the same goals you rightly pursue in Ukraine and the Balkans - it should stand unequivocally with Israel’s right to defeat the terrorist armies on its borders and condition Palestinian aid on ending incitement and recognising Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. Why are you not calling for this?

And we must stay vigilant about the signals coming from Belarus. 🔹 Sudan cannot be forgotten. It is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world right now, yet it is slipping off the agenda. I raise the question of whether the EU's equidistant approach to the belligerents is really the most effective, or whether we need to step up, including through sanctions, if we want to genuinely influence the outcome. 🔹 On the South Caucasus, I recently spoke with my counterparts in Azerbaijan and Armenia. A peace agreement is within reach. We need to provide both political and economic support to anchor these countries firmly in the European dynamic. 🔹 Belgium remains concerned about the situation in the Middle East. Hezbollah must be condemned for dragging Lebanon into a war it did not want, but that does not justify what follows. Israel's disproportionate and indiscriminate response is unacceptable. I welcome the first direct dialogue between Israeli and Lebanese authorities in decades. The people of both countries deserve to be able to live in safety. It was at my suggestion that High Representative Kaja Kallas invited the Lebanese Prime Minister for an exchange today. 🔹The situation in Palestine deteriorates by the day. Settlement expansion, settler violence at unprecedented levels, the adoption of death penalty legislation. Belgium has been calling for months for at least a partial suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The attacks on the values that underpin that agreement are now too serious to ignore. It is time to put this back on the table. 🔹I will also brief my colleagues on my mission to the Balkans and on the geopolitical importance of keeping the prospect of EU membership alive for these populations, in the interests of collective security, prosperity and stability. @BelgiumMFA @BelgiuminEU
