@MikeGrunwald @nytimes Thanks for writing this! So weird how the term carbon footprint is treated these days. I still think it's important enough, especially for the wealthy, that I created a nonprofit centered around the idea. At the risk of shilling: fivepercentpledge.org (Loved your book!)

Yes, the headline is about how you can save $ on gas by getting an EV, but the main point of my @nytimes essay is that individuals have the power to drive change. It’s not only about Trump and Exxon. It’s about you. My unfashionably earnest take below!

Oil spills from tankers have fallen by more than 90% since the 1970s— In the 1970s, oil spills from tankers — container ships transporting oil — were common. Between 70 and 100 spills occurred per year. That’s one or two spills every week. This number has fallen by more than 90% since then. In the last decade, no year has had more than ten oil spills, as shown in the chart. The *quantity* of oil spilled from tankers has also fallen dramatically. Over the last decade, the average is less than 10,000 tonnes per year, compared to over 300,000 tonnes in the 1970s. (This Data Insight was written by @_HannahRitchie.)

@MikeGrunwald Thank you for writing it Mike! Literally just finished it a few hours ago. The section in the epilogue about carbon footprint fired me up (in a good way). Definitely agree with your sentiment! Enough so that my new nonprofit I recently started is based around those ideas.

This is dorky-earnest but I want to thank everyone who’s been reading my book, debating the ideas, and coming to my events. It’s been so cool meeting people who are fired up about this stuff, it makes the years of agony worthwhile. A few examples:

@KevinEspiritu Say you're 45 and want to go back to 20 with the same knowledge...decent chance you will gain well over 25 years since you now have the knowledge and wisdom to not do stupid things to your body.

Genuinely baffled why people are answering anything but 20 years old with 500K, given you retain all knowledge It's 10 years younger than the next oldest option, if you can't figure out how to compound off of $500k at 20 there's no point in you going back at all

@Climatologist49 Stared at this map for like 10 minutes straight. Fascinating as someone that lives in eastern South Dakota. Curious how different it would look if you had average daily high (heat index) for the summer months.

@MikeGrunwald @TamarHaspel Great thread Mike! Question for both/either of you: In what order should we prioritize lessening beef consumption, biofuels, and organics? And are there any lessons/methods we can learn from organic that can justify having it be a small part of overall production?

My point is: Yes, the world needs to waste less food, eat less beef, and use fewer biofuels, but the world also needs to make more food. Doing things that reduce food production make the task harder, which is why the people doing those things pretend it’s not an important task.

Whenever someone says, “the world doesn’t need to make more food, we can just do X instead,” you can be sure that someone is not trying to do X, but is doing something that will reduce the amount of food the world makes.

@SDSearchlight @JoshuaHaiar Would you mind going into more detail on what exactly this affects? I'm well versed in this space and since it's a federal rebate I don't know of anyone that is getting denied in SD. Is this just for low income rebates?
