-Nearly everyone is perfectly casted here for their respective character. -It’s the closest a Superman movie has EVER gone to resembling the charm of the comics both in tone and sci fi elements. -It’s the first Superman movie since Superman: The Movie that actually gives Lois something to do other than be a plot device that gets kidnapped. -The Daily Planet scenes, as little as we get, are perfect. -It’s one of the most visually distinct superhero movies ever. -It’e the first Superman movie to treat Superman himself like a character with personality, opinions, and shortcomings. -It’s the first Superman movie to lean fully on the mad scientist angle of Lex Luthor over the boring businessman trying to invest in real estate shtick. -It’s the first Superman movie to establish that Superman is a worldwide superhero and not just America’s best soldier. -It’s the first Superman movie to showcase Superman mourning Krypton. -It’s the first Superman movie to acknowledge that there are three sides of Superman, and the real person is neither Clark the reporter nor Superman the hero. -The idea of Superman being punk rock / rebellious because he chooses to view everyone and everything as beautiful is actually really poignant, more than a lot of you guys give it credit for. -Using Superman to reintroduce a sense of universal right and wrong in a morally ambiguous world works quite well. -Showing Superman’s familiarity with mere citizens besides Lois is both refreshing and led to one of the most shocking and heart crushing scenes in the film. -Allowing Superman to be weak while at the same time explaining why (his toughest opponent is a clone of himself and he’s trapped in a pocket dimension with Kryptonite poisoning and no yellow sun radiation) is genius and makes him more fun to watch both when he’s challenged and when he’s just throwing down. -Having the lead villain be fully driven by hatred for the hero feels refreshing for a superhero movie. -The Superman suit is pretty good, in its own retro pulpy sci fi kinda way. Something you could actually imagine Superman approaching kids in. Emphasizing the blue collar feel of the character (no pun intended). -Depicting Krypto not as a perfect American dog who does everything right and instead a flawed yet lovable little brother who makes a mess of things and is hard to manage like in the comics was a good choice. -The decision to have the Kent Farm look like an actual modest midwestern farmhouse instead of a luxurious two story structure was a great choice. -This is the first Superman movie in 50 years where Superman and Lois have chemistry. -Depicting Pa Kent as a more softer teddy bear who’s sensitive but loving (or ‘mush’ as Ma calls him) instead of your typical tough as nails masculine American dad works really well and goes to show where Clark gets his personality from as well. -Allowing Eve to actually outsmart Lex because she knows how little he thinks of her and everyone else on the planet was brilliant. -Showing how Superman moves other heroes to action not by his words but solely through his own actions, while also allowing those heroes to keep their methods and agency (Hawkgirl dropping Boravian President) is a perfect use of bringing other heroes in a solo film. -Superman having an actual friendship with 4 and even calling him by the name he wants was very nice. -Having Superman’s speech be about how those who are different constantly have to undergo dehumanization despite having the same emotions we all feel and experience actually hit really hard and it’s a shame that people on this app just decided to interpret it as assimilation slop. -The decision to structure this movie less like a standard superhero blockbuster and more as a series of vignettes that tests and explore different aspects of Superman to create a ‘Week In The Life of’ feel was a risk and one that I believe paid off very well.
