We always ask Flick to take safer approaches when needed by dropping the constant high press and using a mid-block with a lower line. But the last Atleti game showed that the idea alone isn’t enough. I can accept wingers not tracking fullbacks when we’re pressing high since they’re tasked to press centrally, but when we drop into a mid-block, they have to stay wider and protect those lanes. There’s no excuse in that situation. So overall, Flick’s idea to occasionally drop the block is a good one, but the execution isn’t there yet. We need better-timed pressure in the middle third and proper defensive coverage from the wingers. That’s something the team has to fix before the UCL tie.
