@MayaLittle_ @dew_ofthesea i love the secret history but i feel like that's a brain power book cause the prose is so beautiful !

I want to read a big, delicious, somewhat literary but still fun and requiring not vast amounts of brain power novel over Christmas - last year I did Possession and it was perfect - suggestions please? seemingly obvious answers welcome, there's loads I've not got round to!

@dew_ofthesea goldfinch and north and south were gonna be my two recs, but i'll chuck Hard Times in there too

@falseroxy @dew_ofthesea Was gonna suggest this also, though I tend to see The Goldfinch as more of a languid summer novel and The Secret History as one for the wintery depths!

@meganimanic @johngreen I hear ya, but better a single drop than no drop at all I think! Maybe you can tie it in with getting a lil treat for motivation (and hopefully you'll get a fun sticker)?

@MayaLittle_ @johngreen No worries, I’m glad anyone replied in the first place. It’s just hard to take pride in gov’t unless I feel like my voice was heard, but a single drop in a 300 million feels pretty pointless. I’m hoping to get the motivation to just… go do it at some point lol

@johngreen What are your thoughts about the possibility of violence, voter intimidation at the polls in the form of Trumpy “poll watchers,” etc? I live in the one blue county of solid red Utah and am afraid to go to the polls today. I’m still gonna go, but it feels so fraught this year.

@meganimanic @johngreen Also, for me, voting is something I do for myself and take joy in, even when I live somewhere it doesn't 'matter' very much to the overall outcome. It can feel good to know you're using your rights and ensuring that you are counted. Sorry I'm not John, and hoping you get to vote!

@meganimanic @johngreen Firstly, awesome that you vote for local gov't - so important and neglected by many! It's easy to feel like your voice doesn't matter, but you never know what will happen (one year, my UK town went from a conservative safe seat to a slim few hundred votes, requiring 3 recounts).

@reecemcmahon I don't know that it's that far from 'classic touristy' but Washinton Square park to listen to (amazing) buskers and watch skateboarders. I'd also rec Village Works bookshop and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Oh, and Brooklyn Bridge free walking tour was so interesting! Have fun!!
