Our first stop in Jerusalem (in July!) was at one of the foundation's operating programs, STAMP, which is working to standardize the supervision of the writing and checking of sifrei Torah, tefillin and mezuzot. We met the team, under the leadership of Rabbi Avraham Lessin.

In the middle of our trip we had a chance to relax and reflect together atop Mount Carmel. Led by Rabbi Yehoshua Gerzi and Yehuda Raice, and helped by Nachal Noveya tent crew, we spent time learning Torah and exploring frameworks for our work.

In Nitzavim-Vayelech, Moshe appoints Yehoshua as his successor. The mitzvah of Hakhel (to gather) is give. Every 7 years, during Sukkot of the first year of the Shemittah cycle, the Children of Israel should gather at the Temple for the king to read to them from the Torah.

We learned about the work of @ThankIsraeliSoldiers which supports initiatives that embrace, educate and empower soldiers throughout their IDF service and beyond. We visited the Kest Soldier Center and spoke to participants of the Momentum After Army Empowerment Program.

Rabbi Elijah Benamozegh comments on the 13 attributes of God in selichot. He says, "ארך אפים, Slow to anger - this hints at the attribute of patience." As we begin the school year, let us remember to take long breaths--as God figuratively does--and to exhibit patience.

In the Parsha of Ki Tavo, Moshe instructs the Children of Israel to bring the first fruits to the Temple. He tells the people that after forty years as a people, they have attained “a heart to know, eyes to see and ears to hear.”
