It was a real treat to kick off the 20th Virginia Forum this afternoon by leading a walking tour that explored slavery & freedom in Winchester during the Civil War. Excited to welcome 200+ historians to @ShenandoahU tomorrow and Saturday.

Spent the last class of the fall semester @ShenandoahU with students in my US History I survey class in the Winchester National Cemetery to explore the Civil War's cost, impact on families, and its legacies--a powerful ending to a semester with a terrific bunch of students.

@ShenandoahU McCormick CWI’s fall seminar & tour is in the books. What a terrific day on Saturday speaking to an enthusiastic bunch and guiding them around Cedar Creek.

Today was a special day—the dedication of ten historical markers @ShenandoahU highlighting aspects of SU’s 150 years. This started as a class project with my students in January 2024.

A beautiful autumn morning to be out in the field prepping for MCWI’s fall seminar and tour focused on Cedar Creek.

Enjoyed speaking at the Carnegie Library & Music Hall on Sat. about some of the themes explored in my recent book General Philip H. Sheridan: Life, War, and Memory @routledgebooks. The audience was fantastic. Also, many thanks to Jon-Erik Gilot for the tour of the Espy GAR Post.

So very honored that MCWI @ShenandoahU received a grant today from the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley’s Boxley-Fox Endowment Fund to support the creation of a guided tour focused on Cool Spring’s links to the Underground RR & the enslaved at the Retreat.

Excited to receive copies of my latest book, General Philip H. Sheridan: Life, War, and Memory, published as part of @routledgebooks Historical Americans series. Mr. Lincoln demanded a celebratory photograph.

Had an amazing turnout for my tour this morning about the construction of Ft. Collier and the Civil War’s impact on the Stine family. Doubly delighted that three of my wonderful history students from @ShenandoahU attended.

Such an honor, as an alum & history prof., to offer remarks about @ShenandoahU’s history and legacy at SU’s 150th gala. A truly remarkable and memorable evening.
