A totally unexpected picture of my late dad as a young man, working in the cotton mills. An aunt found it in an album in Pakistan. We have so few photos from back then, as cameras were rare for working class families. It's left me quite emotional seeing the years roll back.

I'm working on something in light of the good literary agency's demise. Writers of colour hold on to hope and keep writing your stories. The world needs them more than ever!

@farhanashaikh Realistically, I cannot see how it can be stopped. Writers who aim for self-publishing and success through speed & volume will surely be using ChatGPT extensively already. I have seen examples of mainstream publishers using AI for covers. At the moment it's the wild west.

@MegaphoneWrite They didn't use it to write but they fed it part of the manuscript to get help with the synopsis. 😱

If you feed your manuscript into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, it will nick it. That's what it does! It scrapes information from its existing repository. It generates but does not create new material. I was horrified to learn that writers are doing this.

@farhanashaikh I'm stunned. Can't understand why the bid failed either. 6 years is no length of time to give an innovative business a chance, IMO.

Terribly sad to see this ambitious initiative fail. It suggests something is deeply broken in the industry.

Shocked. My heart goes out to everyone who will lose out from this - agents, writers, or others. I’m especially devastated for the under-represented writers who have recently signed with the agency. 6 years of ££ support for an innovative arts business is short-term thinking.

I am so sorry to read this but what amazing things you achieved. We will miss you. I hope this industry takes to heart what Nikesh said: While we’re closing, and I’m devastated that we have to do this, we turn to the industry and ask you: what are you going to do now we’re not here to pick up your slack? What are you going to do differently? What are you willing to give up? What are you willing to change? We’ve already seen the rolling back of diversity initiatives throughout this industry and other creative industries, and that alarms me. I want us all to do better. We can do better."
