If Assab, Ethiopia truly belonged to Shabia aka Eritreans then it shouldn't have been an issue when Somaliland and FDRE signed the MOU on 1st Jan, 2024. The main reason this weak alliance exist is to somehow prevent Ethiopia's Navy from reaching the Bal al-mandab strait.

Assab, unlike other parts of Eritrea, had historically been administered separately and was primarily inhabited by Afar communities who shared stronger cultural and economic ties with Ethiopia’s Afar population than with Eritrean highlanders.
