To increase speed, sprints need to be short, fast, and allow athletes to recover. Using them as punishment or to make athletes throw up will not improve their speed - it will only teach them to run slowly with bad form.

Maybe I'm wrong here but I want my young boys to want to play whiffle ball in the yard and dunk ball in the driveway more than I want them to do anything "adult-organized" in either sport.

Yes even distance runners need to strength train. More force absorbed/applied into ground w/ each stride = better running economy.
