Canada, what have we done to you to make you hate us so? Have we not been productive members of society, working hard, building businesses, contributing to the Canadian economy, paying taxes? Have we not embraced Canadian values and culture, and the Canadian way of life? Have we not fought hard enough for Canada? Have we not helped others, both within our community and outside of it? Have we not given back, have we not pulled our weight philanthropically? Have we not represented Canada well, both at home and internationally? Have we not done public service, at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, across the nation? Have the Canadian Jewish community let down our country, in any way at all? Then why are you letting us down? Why are you refusing to have our backs? Why are you not affording us the same security and safety that you afford every other Canadian, that is the right of each and every Canadian? Why are you allowing the explosion of Jew-hatred to go unfettered throughout the country? Why are you allowing the incitement of hatred towards us and our community? Why are our governments seemingly ignoring the threat to the Canadian Jewish community, that we are seeing from coast to coast to coast? Is it because you hate us? Or are you simply indifferent? Last night, three people were fired upon with a replica firearm outside Chasidei Bobov synagogue in North York in an abhorrent act of antisemitism, leaving one person injured. I am relieved to hear that an arrest has been made. Law enforcement agencies have my full support as they investigate, and as they work to bring justice for the victims and the wider Jewish community. Last year, we introduced new legislation to the strengthen the criminal code, combat hate, and protect our communities — and we remain absolute in Canada’s commitment to combatting the scourge of antisemitism and hate in all of its forms. Together, we will continue to build a country where all Jewish Canadians can live openly, freely, and safely.

I am disgusted by the targeted antisemitic attacks that took place in North York over the last several days, including last night outside a synagogue. These attacks will not be tolerated and I’m pleased the Toronto Police have acted quickly in response and have a suspect in custody. I expect that all those who are responsible will be punished to the full extent of the law.

Last night, three individuals standing outside a Toronto synagogue were shot at with a replica firearm, leaving one person with minor injuries. This marks the second such incident in a week, following three separate shootings targeting synagogues in March. This is not normal, and it cannot become normalized. Individuals were targeted outside a Jewish institution and subjected to intimidation and violence because of who they are and where they were. The cumulative impact on the Jewish community is profound. Families should not have to fear attending synagogue, gathering in community spaces, or simply standing outside Jewish institutions in Toronto. Governments, law enforcement, and civic leaders must treat these incidents with the seriousness they deserve and ensure those responsible are identified and held accountable. Anyone with information is urged to contact Toronto Police.
