Today was an emotional day. The parents of a child I started tutoring this December, asked me to go over with them the ed and psych reports for a school evaluation they had requested. Telling the mom that after reading the reports my suspicions are stronger that the child has dyslexia. She cried as her husband tried to comfort her. Here is the frustrating part: We are talking about a 2nd-grade child who struggles in every area of reading but who is hard-working, and motivated, with two caring and loving dedicated parents who sat in K, 1st, and 4 months of 2nd-grade classes, and if it wasn't because this mother's institution and initiative this child's problem would have just continued to go unsupported at school level. Why do schools keep playing this waiting game? How much failure does the child need to be experiencing before we decide to provide them with the support and instruction that they need and deserve? WHY do we keep letting kids drown to then try to rescue them?

A successful @TVDSB_STEM activity today in 1/2! Making 3D shapes out of toothpicks and marshmallows is a classic; engaging and fun every time! The problem solving and creativity that was seen and overheard today was music to a teacher's ears. 🎶 @WOorcas @tvdsbmathk8

We celebrated Diwali yesterday in 1/2 by learning about India, what the Festival of Lights is really about, and trying out some of our own rangoli designs. Ss loved learning about these practices and being able to participate! We are in awe of rangoli artists! 🎆 @TVDSB @WOorcas

Ss @WOorcas were very proud and excited to use leaves from around our yard to rip and crumple into “leave glitter confetti” to design and send off our butterfly’s into #tvdsbmigration! Each class worked together to contribute to the most beautiful end results! #orcaproud
