At the University of Groningen, will be presenting part of my research on how @konde_co, @projectm_org, and @News_jubi foster solidarity within the media ecosystem, across organisations, and with their respective communities to build counter-hegemonic networks.

In general, major Japanese manga magazines tend to run around 20 to 25 serialized works, and most of them differ in genre and style. Is it simply by chance that, over the past 70 years of the history of Japanese manga magazines, these magazines have been filled with works that successfully balance commercial appeal and diversity? Of course not! It is the result of the editorial departments’ effort, investment, and capability to curate diversity within their magazines. They search for artists, develop works, and fully exercise their editorial skills—above all, they invest in creators. They sit down with struggling artists who have repeatedly faced rejection and lost their confidence and motivation, offering them nice meals, and giving advice, encouragement, and conversation. “You have a wonderful style." "Our magazine and our readers have been looking for someone like you!" "I truly believe in your strengths—why not bring them fully into your next manga?" "I will support you with everything I have.” Through words like these, editors help creators preserve their individuality and artistic voice. Having worked with more than 20 different publications in Japan, I have experienced this kind of support many times. What is protected can continue to exist. The key is investment in creators. In the Japanese manga industry, this support has taken forms such as manuscript fees(page rates) and initial print runs(the first print run), which serve as ways to invest in and sustain less popular or non-mainstream creators. Of course, even so, each magazine inevitably limits diversity beyond its own editorial direction and identity. I generally understand this. I myself have often struggled and suffered because of those limitations. But a manga magazine is, in a sense, like a shop—and every shop has its own kodawari (こだわり), its guiding philosophy or standards. There is, however, a case from Korea that is said to be difficult to understand. In the 1990s, one Korean manhwa magazine reportedly had stacks of 'Video Girl Ai' in its editorial office. At other times, it was 'Rokudenashi Blues'. They would hand a copy to aspiring artists who visited and tell them to study by copying it. This approach may indeed help with learning style and technics, but it ultimately undermines the richness and diversity that a magazine should embody. 2/4
