I'm back in Modena! Has anyone been to watch Cittadella Vis Modena play? What is the stadium like? Price? Worth going?

@Modena_FC_En @CCalcistica Serie D I assume will be like any lower league in the English system will pay players on a match by match basis Higher amounts for the better players However when a club like Palermo ends up in D they will remain professional throughout that season especially with crowds upto 30k

Can someone help me? What does it actually mean to be a "semi-professional" or "amateur" football club in Italy? Are all Serie C players full time (ie they don't have other jobs) and all Serie D players part time (ie they are paid to play football but need to have another job)?

@CCalcistica There are 100 clubs down to Serie C and 92 clubs down to League Two (4th level). It makes sense that both countries have a split there.

@Modena_FC_En The big split in Italy is clearly at the Serie C/D level. I think players can technically be fully amateur as high as Serie D (i.e. entirely unpaid) but that is rare. In fact, you'll get paid players all the way down to the bottom tier (especially centre-forwards!)

@CCalcistica The main splits are at level 5 and level 11. Level 5 starts what we call "non-league" but clubs can be full time if they want and some get very big crowds. Level 11 starts "county amateur" and clubs at that level usually don't charge for admission, don't have floodlights, etc...

@CCalcistica In England semi-professional means they get paid for playing football but will have another job. There's no real official split in the leagues between professional / semi-professional / amateur.

@Modena_FC_En Even though they’re part of the same league. They might pay some players a fixed monthly wage, and others based on points earned or other bonuses plus expenses etc

@Modena_FC_En Players on non-professional contracts are treated more favourably for tax purposes, which is why you see many established players dropping down. It also makes it cheaper for a Serie D club to contract a player than a Serie C club.
