Actually the British revolted against this idea in the 1800s - viewing it as an unspeakable evil, and decided to bully much of the world into abolition.
In fact, the British were the first global power in history that tried to rid the world of the institution of slavery.
As I explained in a similar post, yesterday:
'Great Britain led the world in abolition, at a time when the institution of slavery was the global normal.
It was perhaps the greatest moral crusade in history.
Between 1808-1860 the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron captured 1600 slave ships and freed 150,000 African slaves.
Over 1500 British naval personnel would die during this abolitionist mission - either in direct conflict with slavers or disease.
Contrary to what’s frequently peddled online, the British didn’t abolish slavery because it was no longer profitable.
Kaufmann & Pape (1999) demonstrated that suppression of the Atlantic Slave trade alone cost Britain roughly 1.8% of yearly GNI between 1807-1867.
(This is far higher than modern humanitarian efforts - for reference, OECD untied development aid lay at 0.33% between 1975-1998.)
Great Britain’s abolitionist quest also meant that it put her in global confrontations - that would have otherwise been unnecessary.
This wasn’t just with African kingdoms & traders - who were profiting by selling their fellow man.
It was with European nations - with Britain strong arming countries into signing abolitionist treaties - and nations thousands of miles away.
For example, take 1826. Brazil signed a treaty with the UK making the entire
slave trade illegal by 1830. Nonetheless, the trade continued to flourish illegally in Brazil with over 750,000 slaves imported from 1831-‘50.
Although Great Britain was using her Royal Navy to capture ships, free slaves & try the slave traders in courts, Brazil refused to renew its treaty with Britain - in 1844.
As such, the subsequent year, Britain passed a law allowing her to declare any Brazilian ships suspected in partaking in the slave trade as piracy - despite Brazil's protests.
In other words, the Royal Navy essentially ignored Brazil & continued capturing their ships & freeing slaves.
Moreover, this Act gave Great Britain the 'excuse' she was longing for - to send the Royal Navy to invade Brazil's territorial waters, which she did in 1850.
Before long, RN warships fired on Brazilian fortresses - e.g. Paranaguà.
This blockade was obviously a complete violation of internationally recognised territory - which Lord Palmerston & the British generally could not care less about.
Britain was to enforce abolition.
Brazil, like all nations, could not afford war with the UK, the world’s undisputed superpower.
Thus in September 1850, Brazil passed an anti-slavery bill, with the trade effectively ending in the next half decade.
We must never forget the role that Britain had in partaking in the vile, evil trade of slavery.
At the same time, let’s not forget that she was the first major power to globally challenge it, and she is the primary reason it is no longer the global norm.'
