@JoannaNoBanana Even though I know I shouldn’t, I do it every time. Just like when night rolls around and I’m not in much pain, I stay up later to enjoy that instead of sleep — even though sleep is necessary to keep flares down.

Coming out of a chronic illness flare up brings up a fear of it coming back again. We never know when that will be. We don't know what will trigger it. I think that's why we overly push ourselves the moment we're out of a flare up.

When it comes to school book bans, we need a powerful community response that puts students first and backs up teachers and librarians. That response starts with a clear understanding of what is happening. Here's what I see going on as of 12/4/21.

We had a dead animal smell brewing in my classroom today, so we went outside & played football & talked & sort of thought about math & I have come to a definitive conclusion: Middle schoolers need recess just as much as elementary schoolers.

I changed my phone’s name to “Your BFF” and I randomly airdrop these to students who are on their phones, and their reactions are hilarious.

@nursekelsey Yep. I’m constantly telling students to pull up their masks. Like, just the bare minimum please. Please. PLEASE.

Teachers who are anxious about going back to work tomorrow, you’re not alone. Teachers who can’t find the willpower to even begin to think about doing work today, you’re not alone. You don’t have to start the week in full force. Ease your way back in.

@_Judy_Bennett Yep and same. With all the extra physical and verbal aggression, my usual SEL practices are not working. I can barely manage a small group, much less a whole class (which, after 25 years of teaching, is difficult to admit).

@MuthaHoney @MartinOdimaJr The work I’ve had to do during this pandemic to make sure my students are getting what they need has really highlighted the inequity between what we do and what other Unit A teachers do for the same $. Having been both Gen Ed and SpEd, I know how much the work differs.

@Ms_ReganHall @MartinOdimaJr Those magical kids deserve more people like us. Imagine the good outcomes for students everywhere if SPED pay truly reflected the actual value of that work.

@MartinOdimaJr SO MUCH. Enough that I wasn’t physically or financially safe in that very necessary work, in one of the best schools, and had to quit. I love my students deeply and rallied within the union for higher pay for special Ed workers pre-covid, no changes resulted. They lost me.
