Amazing how many scouts and coaches you talk to stress defense. Then they get on Twitter and praise a handful of kids that showcase on bad teams by scoring. Keep it consistent, be real with kids. Defense wins but offensive play gets you the spotlight.

I tried to have open communication and expectations with my players. If kids are guessing their role or dont get explanations for our decisions it kills their confidence. Players then feel they have to be perfect to play and if they feel that way they won’t succeed.

As a coach, learn to put yourself in the shoes of your players. Try to understand their perspectives, emotions, and motivations. By having emotional intelligence and empathy, you can connect with your players on a deeper level and help them reach their potential.

A coach can only do so much to help an athlete improve. Ultimately, the success of an athlete comes down to their inner drive. Once an athlete becomes intrinsically motivated, they can get the most out of their coach and reach their full potential.
