Didn’t join the last couple of strikes because I saw the xenophobia and racism from a mile off. Its actually insane and depressing but slowly many of those people are coming to realise, IMGs were never the problem. However, its too late. The damage is done.

Ranked 68 in Ophthalmology ST1. No offer. Read that again. One of the most competitive specialties in the UK: 2,197 applicants. 102 posts. ~22:1 competition. This is NOT “just MSRA”. You need: • Top MSRA to even get shortlisted • A strong, evidence-scored portfolio • A high-performing interview And still, rank 68 doesn’t get you a job. Yet the narrative on @MedReddit is that IMGs are “gaming the system”, “fake CREST”, “substandard training”, “just mug MSRA for a few weeks”. Absolute nonsense. If an IMG is ranking 68 in Ophthalmology, they are outperforming the overwhelming majority of applicants in a rigorous, UK-run, standardised process. This isn’t about IMGs vs UKGs. This is about a system with far too few training posts for the level of talent applying. And instead of fixing capacity, we’re now moving towards restricting access. That is a policy choice. If we are serious about fairness, workforce planning, and representation, that choice needs to be challenged.

Why do doctors from all around the world feel entitled to medical training in the UK? Also don’t their own countries need their doctors? All of them seem to aspire to leave their country when they graduate, what about the people of Nigeria and Pakistan ?

I’m standing for election to BMA UK Council. Over the past few years, I’ve represented colleagues locally, regionally and nationally. At ARM 2025, I wrote and proposed a motion on identity-based care, which passed and is now BMA policy. I want a BMA that stays focused on the issues that matter most to doctors: fair pay, real jobs after training, proper training pathways, and safe medical practice. I also believe our profession should be fair and representative. International Medical Graduates make up a huge part of the NHS workforce, yet remain massively underrepresented in decision-making spaces. That needs to change. If you’re a BMA member, I’d really value your vote.
