He hasn't spoken out forcefully against the war because he's a coward who doesn't want to enrage Trump or his MAGA base, but at the same time he knows that the conflict is deeply unpopular so a full-throated endorsement will harm him long-term. Lacking any real convictions or even a basic functioning spinal cord, Vance has chosen to inhabit a middle ground where he simultaneously annoys Trump and the anti-war crowd. It's the worst of both worlds. Instead of condemning the conflict, he seems to be leaking tidbits of toothless reluctance. One senior White official told Politico that Vance was "skeptical" about the war. Another said that he "just opposes" the war with Iran and is “worried about the success." Again, these are absolutely meaningless snippets from Vance. Anything short of a public rejection of the war is tacit endorsement. Meanwhile, Trump expects Vance to be an eager cheerleader for the bombing campaign that's slaughtering men, women, and children and which could soon escalate into a full-blown ground war. In fact, Trump is dispatching Vance to Pakistan to spearhead the peace talks with Iran, which Daily Beast Chief National Correspondent David Gardner predicts will humiliate Vance when the negotiations end in failure. The karma at play here couldn't be any sweeter. Vance once stated that Trump could be "America's Hitler." He then decided that serving this monster would be politically expedient and agreed to be his vice president in the hopes that it would one day lead to his own presidency.
