@susanjcarey I always think of the pothole report. One does it directly. One writes to their MP...and then a whole chain of people get involved! And it would take a brave MP to bat off such queries with "here's a link," realistically

Arguably combining County and District Councils should make it simpler for residents to know who does what but doesn't address the issue raised in this post that 'MPs are increasingly first and last resort for constituents experiencing problems from across bits of the state.'
At least MPs have support staff. Councillors are largely on their own in dealing with similar levels of contact with both residents and campaign groups on top of their role in seeing that their own council has good policies and is properly run.
