Lewis, the lobbyist, sees warning signs for the state GOP. “Democrats were in their heyday when they had their own state brand of what the Democratic Party was,” he said. They lost “as they started creeping closer and closer to the national Democratic Party.” Berger’s version of Republicanism—conservative but not extremist, allied with but distinct from Trump—has been key to the state party’s success, Lewis argued. Some Page supporters “believe that the Republican brand in North Carolina is impervious,” he said. “I would tell those people that they need to look across the aisle at the Democratic Party as it stands right now.
