Sadly this will be similar here in the UK, terrible year for butterflies. Help us by doing the Big Butterfly Count, negative records are important too! #savebutterflies #BigButterflyCount

2024 shows very low numbers of summer butterflies on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects. Of course the season isn't over yet, but I don't expect the numbers to rise a lot in the coming weeks. I also compared with all previous years and then this max is the lowest since 1990.

The shady passageway by our house has just a single small patch of nettles, but these nettles are home to lots of Snout and Mother of Pearl moth caterpillars. Last year, Red Admiral & Comma butterflies bred here too. Scruffy urban corners like this are so important for nature.
