There are different surgical techniques for the application of amnion - Inlay Transplantation using a graft, Onlay Transplantation using a patch and the Combination Technique, which uses both. The technique used depends on factors such as the depth of the wound.

Champagne bottles can contain pressure as high as 90 pounds per square inch meaning a cork can leave a bottle at 50mph, which can cause eye damage. Omnigen provides amnion off the shelf, which can help aid ophthalmologists in emergency treatment: bit.ly/31NP5mM

It's estimated 4.5 million UK people have diabetes, with 10% developing foot ulcers (DFU). NuVision and Derby Clinical Trials Unit, are running a trial on using amniotic membrane to treat DFU, with data showing new treatment options. Learn more here: bit.ly/3niJmMP

Recurrent Corneal Erosion is a disorder resulting in ocular pain, blurred vision, tearing and photophobia. Small case study data shows sutureless AMT has been shown to reduce recurrent erosions after a 12-month review.

Dry eye disease affects up to 30% of over 50s. This is when the ocular surface is not appropriately moistened, which can lead to severely irritated eyes. Fortunately, amniotic membrane transplant has resulted in improvement in dry eye subjects when worn for around 5 days.

Steven-Johnson Syndrome is a rare disease that can cause the mucous membranes surrounding the eye to blister and ulcerate, potentially leading to vision loss. Studies by Ma et al and Shanbhag et al found that amnion could be used in a bedside procedure to treat patients.

Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency involves the conjunctivalisation of the cornea, resulting in vascularisation, inflammation and persistent epithelial defects. Amnion-assisted Conjunctival Epithelial Redirection redirects conjunctival cells, allowing corneal cell regeneration.

The ACER surgical technique has 4 steps: 1. 360° peritomy and recession of conjunctiva  2. Donor limbal tissue is sutured in place 3. Amnion is sutured on the ocular surface 4. Excess amniotic membrane is tucked under the conjunctiva and secured with fibrin glue

Over 17,000 A&E visits were recorded in England due to fireworks injuries between 2015-2019, and a systematic review found that 1 in 6 ocular firework traumas resulted in vision loss. Fortunately, an amniotic membrane transplant can assist in healing ocular burns.

Remember, remember to be safe this 5th of November.     Each year in the UK, around 300 people will suffer serious eye injuries due to fireworks incidents; 10 of these 300 will lose their eyesight.     See here information on how to treat thermal burns: bit.ly/3nMLyMA

Chemical burns represent 7-10% of eye injuries, and 15-20% of burns to the face involve at least one eye. Ocular burns can be treated with amniotic membrane to help prevent the formation of adhesions.

Persistent epithelial defects  are  ocular indications that are present in ophthalmology departments. According to a publication by Maqsood et al patients had a 86% complete or partial heal rate when treated with Omnigen and OmniLenz.  Read more here: bit.ly/376WyN5

Neoplasms are growths that can occur on any part of the eye. They can either be benign or malignant, but over 800 people in the UK are diagnosed with eye cancer every year. Amnion can be used to aid in the healing of the ocular surface following tumour excision.

In 2020-21, ophthalmology had 5.4 million outpatient appointments. It’s vital that patients are moved through the care pathway quickly when dealing with such high numbers. That is why having treatments like amnion available at an ambulatory level is so important.
