So it's official, South Korean Park Chan-wook has been appointed President of the Jury for the 79th Cannes Film Festival (May 12–23), becoming the first Korean filmmaker to hold this prestigious role in the festival's history. Renowned for his visually audacious, morally complex, and stylistically impeccable cinema, he has long been a Cannes favorite : Oldboy (2004) won the Grand Prix, Thirst (2009) the Jury Prize, The Handmaiden (2016) dazzled in Competition, and Decision to Leave (2022) earned him Best Director. His latest work, the 2025 black comedy thriller No Other Choice (adapted from Donald E. Westlake's The Ax), stars Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin in a razor-sharp satire on unemployment, corporate dehumanization, and desperate competition.
