She highlighted new qualifications, digital skills programmes, and workplace-based learning that equip public servants for a future-ready workforce.

Moving beyond a traditional overview, his input unpacks how PSETA’s priorities translate into real impact, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to strengthening employability, enhancing service delivery, and building a capable, future-ready public service.

The session was officially welcomed by Ms Vanitha Francis, Senior Manager: Transversal HRD in the Office of the Premier, who warmly received PSETA to the province. In her remarks, she briefly outlined the purpose of the engagement and underscored its importance in strengthening collaboration, aligning skills development efforts, and advancing a capable and responsive public service in Mpumalanga.

PSETA is in Mbombela, Mpumalanga for the CEO Stakeholder Engagement Roadshow, continuing to strengthen partnerships and advance skills development within the province. The organisation is no stranger to Mpumalanga, having supported a number of students who are now approaching graduation, a testament to the impact of sustained investment in education and training. The session has brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including SAPS, the University of Mpumalanga, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Education, the Department of Social Development, and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, among others. The programme is being expertly facilitated by PSETA Corporate Services Executive, Adv Siphokazi Moleshe, who opened the session on a vibrant and uplifting note, using song to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose among participants.

As the Northern Cape CEO Stakeholder Engagement Roadshow concludes, PSETA extends its sincere appreciation to all stakeholders for a highly interactive and meaningful engagement. We thank the Office of the Premier, provincial departments, public entities, and institutions of higher learning for their active participation and valuable contributions. The insights shared and discussions held reflect a collective commitment to strengthening skills development and building a capable, future-ready public service. PSETA looks forward to continued collaboration with the Northern Cape as we work together to drive impact and create sustainable opportunities for all.

PSETA COO, Ms Shivanthini Nagalingam-Potter, delivered an information-rich presentation unpacking the PSETA value chain and its role in shaping a capable and professional public service. Her presentation provided a comprehensive overview of PSETA’s strategic priorities, the professionalisation framework, research agenda, occupational qualifications, new qualifications, targeted interventions, and the development of a workplace-based learning framework. Focusing on professionalisation, she outlined PSETA’s position within the broader ecosystem and emphasised key requirements such as competency-based career pathways, occupationally aligned qualifications, ethical and capable public servants, and continuous professional development. She further explained how these are operationalised through sector skills planning, occupational qualification development, workplace-based learning, as well as research and skills forecasting. Ms Nagalingam-Potter also highlighted newly developed occupational qualifications in areas such as project management, labour inspection, and policy and planning management, alongside skills programmes in digital literacy and data analytics, all aimed at strengthening the capability of the public service for the future.

PSETA CEO, Ms Bontle Lerumo, delivers an energetic and thought-provoking presentation on the PSETA Report on Future Skills and Competencies at the Northern Cape CEO Stakeholder Engagement Roadshow. She poses a compelling question: Is the public service ready to welcome Gen Z? She invites stakeholders to reflect on whether current policies and workplace practices truly accommodate a generation of public servants who think differently, bring fresh perspectives, and challenge established norms. Are we creating the space for them to innovate and transform the public service, or are we unintentionally stifling their potential? Ms Lerumo also highlights critical challenges faced by the public service sector affecting the development of future public servants, including, the placement and growth of learners and interns, limited recognition of occupational qualifications, misalignment between higher education programmes and sector needs, and the absorption of young talent into the system. She notes, however, that there are strong examples of progress: According to PSETA tracking and tracer studies, the Northern Cape leads in the absorption of learners and interns, demonstrating how effective support and coordination can successfully prepare the next generation to contribute meaningfully to the public service.

Chairperson of the PSETA Accounting Authority, Dr Kennedy Maimela, is delivering an interactive presentation on PSETA’s strategic overview at the Northern Cape CEO Stakeholder Engagement Roadshow. His presentation outlines key strategic goals and expected outcomes, including increased employability and improved service delivery efficiency, modernised training delivery, and strengthening Africa’s role in global affairs. He is also highlighting PSETA’s focus areas such as training for unemployed youth, ICT and e-learning, as well as advancing equity, inclusivity, and gender balance. In addressing the broader landscape, Dr Maimela is unpacking key challenges and risks, including funding constraints, capacity gaps, technology adoption, and the need for stronger stakeholder coordination to ensure alignment across government departments.

Her address sets the tone for meaningful engagement, emphasising the importance of collaboration in building a capable, responsive, and skilled public sector.

Today, we join the nation in commemorating Human Rights Day, a moment of reflection on our shared responsibility to uphold the rights, dignity, and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution. This year’s theme, “The Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real,” calls on each of us to move beyond principle into practice. It reminds us that human rights are not abstract ideals, but lived realities that must be protected, promoted, and respected in our daily work and interactions. As PSETA, our mandate within the public service sector places us at the centre of advancing equitable access to skills development and opportunities. Through our programmes, stakeholder engagements, and internal culture, we contribute to building a capable, ethical, and developmental state, one that is grounded in fairness, inclusion, and respect for all. Let this day serve as a renewed commitment to: Treat one another with dignity and respect; Promote inclusivity and fairness in all our engagements; Uphold ethical conduct and accountability in the execution of our duties; Contribute meaningfully to a public service that reflects the values of our Constitution. Day 2 at the Public Sector Trainers Forum 2026 Conference and PSETA is back at the exhibition floor, continuing to engage with delegates and stakeholders from across the public sector.

PSETA Chief Operations Officer, Shivanthini Nagalingam-Potter, contributed to one of the conference sessions, opening with a powerful reflection on the meaning of public service: “Working in the public sector is a vocation, a form of work where an individual experiences a calling, not merely working for an income.” She emphasised that serving in government requires a strong sense of purpose, service and commitment. Discussions throughout the session also focused on one of the sector’s most pressing challenges, youth unemployment. Speakers explored how the public sector can become more attractive to young people, the importance of bridging generational gaps in the workplace, and the need to preserve and pass on institutional knowledge to the next generation of public servants. Hosted by the National School of Government at the Birchwood Hotel & Conference Centre, the conference continues to provide a valuable platform for collaboration and strengthening training across the public sector. #PSETA #PSTF2026
