Springboro Ohio Latest News And Information
Finally! The old Kroger location on SR 73 (next to the new Kroger) has been sold. And the exciting news is that the new business is guaranteed to generate millions of dollars of new revenue for the City of Springboro. Beginning in September, Women's Cage Diving comes to Springboro! The parent company "See Creatures" is opening its third location in our city. Alligators, crocodiles, swordfish, sea lions, and other man-eating ocean dwellers will battle selected women in a protected enclosure. The reconfiguration of the building will commence on April 15th. "We'll have a fully enclosed large water tank, with available seating for 3,200 spectators," said See Creatures spokesman Kent "Flounder" Dorfman. "Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night, we will have "Chum Festivals," which features competing teams from the National Water League (NWL), the nation's only association for human vs. sea animal fighting." The most popular event will occur every other Tuesday, when local residents can enter the tank and experience the thrill of a lifetime. The cost will only be $125 per half hour. Aqua suits and goggles are provided. The cage is made of tungsten steel and has never been breached. For budget-conscious persons, for only $50 per half hour, previously patched cages are available, although a medical waiver is needed. "Both options are fairly safe," said Dorfman. "In four years of operations, other than some missing limbs and unexplained wounds, we have experienced no fatalities. Also, these are man-eating creatures, so they may not be aggressive towards women. However, off-camera, Dorfman admitted that one out of every eight participants seem to mysteriously disappear. The new venture is already causing some national concern. Representatives of the Ohio PETA branch have voiced their discontent in a press conference in Cincinnati last week. "Sharks have feelings too, you know," said PETA Regional Director Cris P. Bacon. "And also...Stop saying "Kill two birds with one stone." That's not nice." Annual tax revenue for the City of Springboro is expected to exceed $1 million. Distribution of the proceeds will need to be discussed, although City Manager Phil Rizzuto hinted that Springboro may use the money to host its own version of the popular TV show "Shark Tank." Springboro HS Grad Ryan Johnson Wins NCAA Title In Weight Throw, Fourth Longest In World! As a freshman at Springboro High School, Ryan Johnson said he “fell out of love” with football. He was tired of hurting players and wanted to play a sport where he could encourage himself and his opponents. So he traded in his shoulder pads and helmet for discs and shot puts. He obviously made the right decision. Johnson, 21, a 2023 Springboro High graduate, is a junior on the University of Iowa track and field team where he recently won the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship for the weight throw at the University of Arkansas. Johnson’s throw of 25.64 meters won Iowa’s first weight throw NCAA title and set meet and facility records. His mark was two centimeters off his personal best. He’s now a two-time first-team All-American after placing third a season ago. He’s a back-to-back BIG 10 champion after he threw the all-time NCAA record weight throw of 25.66 meter, the fourth longest in world history. He was asked what’s it like throwing around a 35-pound weight. “You mentally have to tell yourself this thing weighs nothing,” he said. Johnson, 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, is on the watch list for the Bowerman Award, the highest award in NCAA track and field. Winners are selected by the Bowerman Advisory Board and Bowerman voters based on performances from the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. icon to expand image While he appreciates all the accolades, Johnson prefers to give all the credit to God. At the NCAA indoor meet, Johnson held a Bible in his right hand while standing on the podium with a gold medal and a cross around his neck. “I have always trusted God with my agenda, my effort,” he said from Iowa City. “I try to glorify His name, not mine. God has been good to me for sure.” The Johnson family, his parents Brad and Brenna, and sister Hannah, attend First United Methodist Church in Springboro. His mother said Ryan has always had a strong faith and he has found some “really good Christian leaders” in college. After graduating from Springboro, Johnson attended Eastern Michigan for one season, then transferred to Iowa. A mechanical engineering major, Johnson has the work ethic “like no one ever,” his mother said. “He works hard, sees what he wants and goes after it.” When Johnson attended Eastern Michigan for one year, he said the football coaches tried to recruit him. He said the Iowa coaches haven’t approached him. While he hasn’t played football for years, he may participate in the NFL combine after college “just for fun,” he said. “But only if it glorifies the Lord.” Article link: journal-news.com/news/springbor…

Springboro’s CHESS Christian Royals (21-4) End Great Season As OVCC Champions And State Runner-Up With 64-49 Loss To #1 Overall Seed Columbus’ High Street Christian Academy. The team had an impressive run in the Ohio Christian School Athletic Association (OCSAA) state tournament, culminating in their first-ever Final Four appearance. The Championship game pitted the two best teams in the state in an anticipated battle. The first half was a back-and-forth slugfest, with CHESS trailing narrowly 28-27 at halftime—capped by a highlight-reel buzzer play just before half: Hunter Brooks inbounding to Huff at mid court, then back to Brooks cutting backdoor for the score. High Street's depth helped them build a lead in the third quarter, but the Royals fought back to keep it within 4 points entering the fourth. In the final period, High Street's relentless pressure, well executed scouting, and depth proved too much, imposing their will for a 64-49 victory. This ended the Royals' season as OVCC Champions and state runners-up at 21-4. A special moment came late in the finals when Silas Kempe drained a 3-pointer to join Josh Huff in the 1,000-point club—just one game after Huff's milestone. Four Royals played all 32 minutes, battling resiliently to the end. Post-game, while High Street cut down the nets, the tight-knit CHESS community—players, families, and fans—gathered at the other end of the court for photos, smiles, conversations, and even some casual shooting. They lingered longer than the champions, a testament to the program's character: fierce competitiveness on the court with intensity, swagger, controlled aggression, and suffocating defense, yet grounded in integrity, sportsmanship, and Christ-like values off it. Win or loss, they model that sports is ultimately just a game. The future looks bright for CHESS, with Huff and Kempe returning for their senior seasons alongside sharpshooter Ben Baker. This group balances punishing opponents with genuine character, uncommon in today's sports landscape, and leaves unfinished business for next year. Note: In the state semifinal on Friday, the Royals delivered a commanding 68-50 victory over HEARTS for Jesus Christ. They showcased efficient offense and elite defense, holding their opponent—a strong 3-point shooting team—to just 4-of-27 (14.8%) from beyond the arc. A highlight was Josh Huff surpassing 1,000 career points during the game, celebrated on the court. Huff led with 23 points (10-12 FG), 9 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Silas Kempe added a near triple-double with 18 points, 7 assists, and 10 rebounds. Ben Baker and Tre Hecker each chipped in 11 points. The Royals weathered early pressure and a late push before pulling away decisively, demonstrating composure and toughness in playoff intensity.

Chess Christian School Basketball Fever...Catch It! Sometimes, the best stories in sports unfold quietly — until suddenly they’re impossible to ignore. This may be happening right now at Chess Christian School. On paper, it’s a small Christian school with about 400 students. The kind of place you might expect an “aw shucks, nice effort” basketball team. But what’s happening in that gym this season is something very different. The Chess Royals Boys Varsity Basketball Tram is 18–2, recently avenging its only two losses of the season by beating the extremely physical rival team from Centerville's Spring Valley Academy to win the OVCC Championship. And on Monday, the Royals defeated two-time defending state champion New Hope Christian Academy to advance to the Final Four in the Ohio Christian School Athletic Association tournament next Friday and Saturday (3/13, 3/14) near Columbus. And they didn’t just win — they put on a show. Sixth-year head coach Ricky Wright has quietly built a program that blends athleticism, swagger, and a true team-first culture. At the center of it all is 6'3" junior and Conference MVP Silas Kempe — a silky-smooth scorer, and defensive stopper who leads with calm confidence and seems to deliver his best when the lights are brightest. He’s surrounded by a deep cast of players who embrace their roles: Tre Hecker - The steady floor general and defensive stopper. Hudson Brooks - A senior point guard slasher with explosive athleticism and highlight dunks. Ben Baker - A 5'9" sharpshooter with a baby face who looks like he might be bagging groceries at Dorothy Lane Market, until he steps onto the court and starts raining threes. Against New Hope, Baker caught fire and buried eight three-pointers on his way to 26 points, leading all scorers. Josh Huff - A clutch go-to physical inside presence, a double-double machine. But perhaps the culture around this team and school may be just as impressive as the basketball. A few weeks ago, after finishing his own game, Kempe drove across town to cheer on a Chess second-grader’s youth basketball game at Dennis Elementary. The kids look up to the players like superstars and to them, they truly are. It meant the world to that young player and reflected the kind of mentorship and connection the school encourages between older and younger students. In a world where youth sports can sometimes drift in the wrong direction, this program feels like it’s doing things the right way — not just talking about culture, but actually living it. (M Hutter)

The Nesting Garden Set For March 3rd Opening In Historic Downtown Springboro! Stephanie Schnoor, a longtime resident who fell in love with the community after relocating here in 2016, is very excited about opening her dream boutique. Originally from Southern California, Stephanie moved to the area with her family when her husband, an Air Force test pilot, was assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for the last three years of his career. The family embraced Springboro's welcoming small-city vibe so much, they chose to stay permanently rather than return to the West Coast. As a devoted wife and mother to three sons—all graduates of Springboro High School—Stephanie has balanced family life while nurturing her passions for nature, creativity, and community. Stephanie previously worked at Barefoot Girl at Home, the popular boutique located at 325 S. Main St. and owned by Amy Hoptry. There, she thrived on interacting with customers, enjoying the charm of downtown Springboro, and watching Amy make homemade soaps, lotions and bath soaks. "The store always smelled so good!” she recalled." When I worked there, I had no idea I would be opening my own store.” The new shop is located at 209 S. Main Street and is a reflection of everything Stephanie loves: nature, beauty, and thoughtful gifting. The store will feature dried flowers sourced locally from CC's Blooms in nearby Lebanon, known for its farm-grown blooms. The Nesting Garden will also showcase hand-picked artificial flowers from various companies, creating lasting arrangements year-round. A special farm section will highlight fresh eggs from Stephanie's own five-acre property dried soups, honey, and edible flowers. The remaining space will overflow with a unique selection of gifts for all occasions, designed to inspire joy and warmth. Stephanie's farm life fuels her creativity, with Babydoll sheep, miniature donkeys, a flock of chickens, and a standout turkey named Brick roaming the grounds. Her chickens are even known to don diapers and come inside the house to entertain guests!. #SpringboroOhio #Springboro

Sticky Mouse Trap Caper In Springboro Doesn't Work! 2nd man gets jail for using sticky mouse traps to steal mail in Springboro: A Springboro detective on Aug. 17, 2025, reportedly witnessed a theft from a blue collection box outside the U.S. Postal Service branch at 55 S. Pioneer Blvd. while surveilling the area as part of an investigation into recent thefts from the collection box, according to the Springboro Police Department. The detective saw three men remove mail from the collection box and toss mail out the window of a vehicle, according to court records. “Sticky mouse traps were located that the (defendants) used to remove the mail,” a criminal complaint read. The second of two Columbus men accused of using sticky mouse traps to steal mail from a blue collection box outside the Springboro post office will spend nearly six months in jail. Yahir Nazario Reyes Jr., 22, who previously pleaded guilty to attempted tampering in evidence and theft of mail, was sentenced Tuesday by Warren County Common Pleas Judge Robert Peeler to 180 days in jail. He was granted 23 days of jail time credit for a total of 157 days in the Warren County Jail. He also was ordered to serve three years of community control on basic probation and complete a theft class, according to sentencing documents. Reyes and Carlos Patricio Sanchez-Guzman, 21, were each indicted for tampering with evidence, theft of mail and possessing criminal tools. Sanchez-Guzman also was charged with falsification and obstructing official business, a misdemeanor, for reportedly lying to police about his identity when he was arrested. A grand jury declined to indict the third man, court records show. Sanchez-Guzman was sentenced Nov. 11, 2025, to 180 days with credit for 86 days for a total of 94 days in jail followed by one year of community control on basic probation, according to a sentencing document. As part of their guilty pleas the possessing criminal tools charge plus the other charges against Sanchez-Guzman were dismissed. Article link: daytondailynews.com/crime/2nd-man-…
