It is a birth. “Being born again… by the word of God” (1 Peter 1:23). A birth cannot be undone every time a child stumbles. You may disrupt fellowship, but you do not reverse DNA. Jesus did not say, “I give them temporary life.” He said, “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:28). Eternal means eternal. If it can be lost, it was never eternal to begin with. Either His words stand, or our fears do. Paul settled the issue in Romans 8. “Whom he justified, them he also glorified” (Romans 8:30). Notice the chain. No dropouts. No spiritual casualties slipping through heaven’s fingers. The same group justified is the group glorified. God does not start what He cannot finish. Once saved always saved is not permission to sin. It is protection from despair. It does not weaken holiness; it anchors it. A man secure in grace obeys from love, not terror. If salvation depends on you keeping yourself saved, then grace was never grace. But if it depends on Christ, then His finished work is exactly that, finished.
