Oviosu wants Paga to go even further by expanding into new African markets, stablecoins, and AI-powered commerce, efforts he could not lead while running the company’s complex domestic operations. Paga wants to be what Oviosu calls the “global financial services infrastructure for Africa”, and reaching that goal requires shifting from domestic operations to new markets and new technologies. Jay Alabraba, Paga’s co-founder and director of business development, is also transitioning to group director of special projects, with an initial focus on two priorities: building out Paga’s financial services offerings around credit and lending and supporting Oviosu on new market entry. At the group level, Oviosu will lead Paga Labs, a unit that has been operating quietly for about 18 months. The division is Paga’s vehicle for investing in emerging financial technologies, and Oviosu said it is preparing to launch products across three areas: stablecoins, blockchain (where it has already partnered with local partners), and AI-enabled commerce. “How does AI affect payments? How does AI come into the world of what we’re building and make things just easier? Make commerce easier,” Oviosu said. “Those are the things that we are going to lean on very strongly.” The restructuring is not tied to a specific capital raise, Oviosu said, but he confirmed that Paga will go out and raise fresh funding to finance its group-level ambitions. The company is also likely to pursue acquisitions to expand into new markets. “The phrase ‘stepping back’ is actually not the right phrase,” he said, noting that he got emotional when informing the CBN about the change. “My child’s first word was Paga.”

I am an incurable optimist. In every experience, I look for the silver lining. After my disappointing experience with @buypowerng, something interesting happened. Tayo @oviosu of Paga responded to my post. We have never met. Under his comment, I asked a simple question: what are you offering? His reply: “Polite customer service and no stress.” I found that simple, confident and engaging. I took the bait. This evening, I downloaded the Paga app and got more than I expected - a US bank account. That alone solved a real problem for me. There is a lesson here. When you combine execution with awareness, you build a company and a responsive brand. And when a CEO pays attention, opportunity follows and tone is set throughout the company. Paga gained a customer today, not because they advertised, but because Tayo showed up and was responsive. As I often say, it is not just business, it is personal. I have always believed in staying grounded. Even in public office, I handled many routine tasks myself, buying tickets, paying bills, engaging directly. Why? Because reality is best understood firsthand. And like every muscle, awareness weakens when it is not used. When small things are done well, big things become easier. I agree. The trust Multichoice placed in Paga when we were quite early in our journey was our unlocking partnership. The first integration to paying your DStv on Paga was actually an email we sent to an address monitored by two Multichoice staff. Upon recieving the email they gave credit to the account. We did this for 6 months before Multichoice agreed for Paga to integrate directly into its system in South Africa. We were the first company to do so. What was also being tested in that 6 months was my unequivocal promise that we will always settle Multichoice for every payment the next morning without failure. I argued we would not put down any deposits but that should we miss a single day, our business ends. It's been about 16 years and we've never failed on that promise. At some point Multichoice used Paga for payment collection in its own stores while they upgraded their systems. In the early days I would be at Multichoice offices at least once a week and many times unannounced. Everyone knew me. Those appearances also led to other opportunities with them and deepened our mutual trust. Grateful always to the people of Multichoice who gave us a chance.
