Addicts warning about the dangers of addiction is literally how it’s done, Billy. Who could be better placed to make the case?

I wouldn’t take someone seriously if they self-righteously lectured smokers about the horrors of tobacco while taking a drag from a cigarette, and I do not take people seriously as they yell about how social media is destroying society while they post 6 times an hour

@deadalright Social media is not a “treat” dude it’s an entire dimension of existence for these kids. And it’s increasingly impossible to opt out of.

@Pardee Could she take little Debbie to court if she got addicted to sweets? I really think in these situations it's the parents responsibility to step in and limit their kid. All treats can be addictive, you can't ask the government to prosecute everyone making treats

@RealHarryFlash This seems like some kind of performance of personal parenting virtue + a bizarre advocacy for companies rights to not be regulated. That is not my crusade. These companies are evil and I’d like to figure out how to hold them even a little bit accountable.

Actually I'm a person who thinks companies should not be liable for bad parenting. I'm a father who would never blame an outside entity because I neglected my kids and let the internet parent them.
I'm a person who believes that juries should rule on facts, not on women's tears.

@matthewgoldin You can argue the merits of this case or how we want to define addiction, but to dismiss the public reaction to these altogether unregulated companies’ obvious predatory behavior as some kind of mass hysteria just seems strange to me. It’s right in front of our eyes.

@Pardee It's the extreme usage that's the issue here. While these people design the apps to be addicting it's going to be a hard sell in court to prove they need to offer some sort of disclosure. It would seem intuitive that parents should screen time. It's like video games in the 2000s
