The oral doctoral examination of Maxx Swoger, candidate for the Ph.D. degree, will be held on August 15 at 1 p.m. in room 202. The title of the candidate’s dissertation is: “Vimentin inside and outside the cell: from cell spreading and nuclear mechanics to COVID-19.” #SUPhysics

Maria was a nuclear physicist who had a huge impact on biology & medicine. Her 1930 PhD thesis described two-photon systems that was the basis for the Two-Photon Microscope invited in the 90s. It is now state of the art technology for 3D imaging and used to diagnose skin legions.

Maria Goeppert Mayer was the 2nd woman to earn the Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the nuclear shell model. This week Argonne Lab & UChicago celebrated 75 yrs of the Nuclear Shell Model and Mayer's growing legacy. Shout out to Rhiannon Hutton for sharing this great quote!
