As much as this is hard, after this reset in the next 2 weeks a once dire impossible situation is much more workable for Xbox new CEO. Part of the problem with previous leadership was its culture. I’ve said that many times. This reset is looking to reset that culture and change up once perceived goals and rules set by Phil and leadership. Xbox CEO ASHA wants to define herself and is looking to pretty much do the opposite of what previous leadership was. Exclusivity, hardware, barrier to entry into the market, and mature games (hopefully). The using of the word fuck and nature of Gears reveal shows a stark difference between Phils leadership. Phil was against cursing. 🤬

TM06💿: I 💙 JRPGs
Xbox and PlayStation shutting studios left and right this year is a reminder that Nintendo's old guard was right all along. While the industry chased endless growth and ballooning budgets, Nintendo stayed focused on sustainable development. Their philosophy keeps winning.

No way Xbox is getting this much heat for closing studios or moving them on from internal to independent! Don't forget, previous leadership and poor decisions has cost Xbox dearly financially! I don't remember Sony getting this much heat with the way they've handled Bungie all these years and other internal studios. It's business and very sad people may loose their jobs but the industry as a whole has been very unpredictable the last six years.

It appears like XBOX’s management is making decisions on the fly (if the reports are true) by shutting down Ninja Theory just 8 days after announcing their game SENUA🚀 Plus, cancelling the PS5 version of Gears of War E-Day just a day or two before their showcase, when it’s technically finished, according to reports. I don’t get them, really. They’re doing everything BUT supporting making great games, whether it’s Phil or Asha, and the only ones paying the price for these terrible decisions and unsustainable bussiness models and expectations, are the talented employees. It’s really sad to watch…🎤

@NintyPrime It’s more of a switch 1.5. And honestly that is what I expected. They have dropped the ball after successful consoles consistently. They went more conservative with the switch 2. I think it was the right call.

@DustinCanFly Too expensive when you can wait on a sale. Companies need to factor that into raises/lay offs.

@DMC_Ryan Avowed (and Indy) are the only games I would play from that list. Just another reason to only buy Game Pass one month at a time!

Considering Microsoft has a packed holiday lineup already (STALKER 2, Indy, Flight Sim 24, Black Ops 6 on Game Pass), I'm good w/Avowed bumping to early '25. Q4 tends to be friendlier to known IPs than new ones anyway (unless you have a huge marketing budget, like Gears 1, AC1).
Tom Warren@tomwarren

Microsoft is about to delay Avowed slightly. I’m hearing that Obsidian is about to announce an Avowed delay to early 2025. More on this in Notepad this week: theverge.com/2024/8/1/24211…

Awful news that the Layoff Eye of Sauron once again casts out from Microsoft HQ today, with Arkane Austin (Prey, Redfall), Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within, Hi-Fi Rush), and Alpha Dog (Mighty Doom for mobile) closing. As a guy who doesn't pretend how to know how to best run Xbox but has covered this company for 20+ years, I have some thoughts (warning: long post): 1) Phil has talked about wanting Japanese developers on the Xbox platform...and they just shut down their only Japanese studio. 🤷‍♂️ 2) Speaking of Tango, is it a coincidence that this is happening after industry legend and studio founder Shinji Mikami left? Was the studio unable to find leadership and/or traction on a new project after his departure? I obviously don't know anything, but I can't help but wonder if this is a factor. 3) Redfall was a huge miss, sure – one that I still maintain that Xbox leadership should've better seen coming – but with Arkane Austin's track record up to that point, do they really not merit another chance? Again, I'm not privy to the inner biz details, but what message does this send to Microsoft's other first-party studios? 4) For a first-party publisher who is in desperate need of more exclusive games on its platform, it is absolutely WILD that they are closing studios. Again, I recognize that the business reality is far more complicated than that, but nevertheless, the optics for Xbox gamers are...not great. 5) Matt Booty says they're "prioritizing high-impact titles," so does this mean we shouldn't look forward to new ideas like Hi-Fi Rush and instead expect very little outside of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, and Wolfenstein (and maybe Indy if The Great Circle is a big hit)? As always, I hope the affected developers find a rewarding next chapter of their careers very soon. Perhaps some of them will start new studios and we'll see a lot of new seeds planted that will eventually sprout creative, brilliant, original new games. ign.com/articles/micro…

@longislandviper I think the game is pretty average overall. This game is begging for quality of life improvements too! Why do I have to hold the sign at a chocobo stop? And the mini games seemed designed by first time developers.

I'm 75 hours into Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and it's amazing. Truly. But there's a problem: It's way too long, a common problem with recent years' great AAAs, from RDR2 to TLoU2. AAA games should be tailored experiences, not lifestyles choices. Leave the bloat to A/AA & GaaS.

We already got the glorious return of The Duke controller for Xbox. Now Hyperkin is bringing back the Controller S too! Honestly the Series X|S controller is the best gamepad ever IMHO, but this would still be fun for firing up classic back-compat games: ign.com/articles/origi…
