The National Election Commission (NEC) announced on the 8th that as many as 140 polling stations received additional shipments of ballots due to concerns over shortages on the 3rd, the main voting day of the June 3 local elections. A total of 14,288 polling stations were operated nationwide for this election. ​This figure is an increase of 73 locations compared to the initial investigation results announced directly by the NEC on the 5th. Yoon Jae-soo, Director General of the Election Policy Bureau at the Central NEC, had stated in a briefing on that day, "According to the findings so far, there are 67 polling stations that received additional shipments due to a shortage of ballots." ​Looking at the regional distribution of the 140 polling stations, Seoul had the highest number with 53 locations, followed by: ​Gyeonggi: 36 ​Incheon: 18 ​Busan: 9 ​Daegu: 7 ​Gyeongnam: 5 ​Jeonnam: 4 ​Ulsan: 3 ​Gangwon: 2 ​Chungbuk, Jeonbuk, and Gyeongbuk: 1 each ​The number of polling stations where the additionally shipped ballots were actually used in voting also reached 91. This is also an increase of 41 locations compared to the announcement on the 5th. ​The number of polling stations that experienced suspensions and resumptions of voting due to running out of ballots was tallied at 26, an increase of 4 locations compared to the 5th. ​As the actual number of ballot-shortage polling stations announced just three days apart from the NEC's initial assessment shows a difference of more than twofold, public suspicion regarding the circumstances is bound to grow. The detailed background is expected to be uncovered in future truth-finding investigations. ​In connection with this, the NEC plans to operate the 'Fact-Finding Committee on the Ballot Shortage Crisis' from the 10th to the 19th to identify the cause of this incident and clarify accountability. ​The committee consists of a total of six external figures recommended by civic groups, the legal community, the media, and academia. Attorney Cho Hyun-wook, who served as the president of the Korean Women Lawyers Association, was selected as the chairperson. ​The committee is reportedly set to investigate the entire process, including ballot printing, allocation, and supply management. It also plans to assess the appropriateness of polling station operations, initial responses, and the reporting system after the situation occurred. ​In addition to what the NEC announced on the 8th, the committee will also investigate whether there were other polling stations where ballot shortages occurred. ​Meanwhile, the NEC announced on this day that Standing Commissioner Wi Cheol-hwan will act as the proxy for Central Election Committee Chairperson Noh Tae-ak, who stepped down following a notice of dismissal from Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae. ​As Secretary-General Heo Chul-hoon's resignation was accepted, Deputy Secretary-General Kang Dong-wan will serve as the acting Secretary-General.
