New pub on experiences of, recommendations for, and ethics involved in dealing with the bot crisis! Huge amounts of online survey data may be completely fraudulent and the fight for data integrity is one we may all soon be facing

An analysis of ~10,000 PhD students finds that: Having an advisor with a strong publication record + past students who have been successful predicts success, along with having a close student-advisor relationship and publications prior to starting one's PhD: nber.org/system/files/w…

My dissertation research most likely won’t be funded by the government because it focuses on SGM people and I applied for a DEI grant (NIMH R36). I’m sure others are going through the same. Can we start a thread on nongovernmental funds that will fund SGM research? I’ll start-

My super hot take is no is a full sentence, whether it comes from a student or from anyone. It is really hard to say no, especially when you are in a lower position of power, so please take several steps back and leave those folks alone, thank you very much.

The toxic culture in academia actually has got to stop. When a student is telling you they’re stretched thin and won’t be able to compete a certain task WELL IN ADVANCE, it is not an invitation to back them into a wall and still convince them to do said task. I SAID NO!

Everyone says “Today’s PhD students are so accomplished I wouldn’t have gotten in today” as if it’s a good thing. It’s not. There are amazing young scientists out there today. But grad admissions is ignoring wide swaths of them because it’s been infected with the same credentialist bullshit of faculty hiring and grants.

Pretty crazy after reviewing the applications of some Stanford PhD applicants and feel like they can graduate right away after the admission 😄
