Meeting @PreBasicGrowers, Agriculture Minister @JimFairlieLogie discussed the importance of the seed potato industry and PBGA’s vital role underpinning potato production & health. @ScotGovSASA continues to work with producers to maintain the highest quality of seed potatoes.

@jtschuilenga @Golding314159 @lizzzburden @PotatoHouseUK Also with reduced availability of insecticides and nematicides, Scotland is the ideal place to grow healthy early generation seed for Europe. We can even grow organic seed with very low levels of virus and EU wants 20% of production from organic.

@jtschuilenga @Golding314159 @lizzzburden @PotatoHouseUK Maybe 'need' is too strong. But we have (had) good demand for our seed in EU. Ireland is particularly dependent on our seed, and our varieties and seed are preferred in Spain, Portugal and Sweden.

Should growers fund R&D to find solutions to seed production problems. Bigger Subscriptions to @ConsultingSAC / @ScotAgCoOp? A compulsory levy on ha or seed labels? Or will chemical companies do what's needed?

There are plenty Independent Research organisations out there to do the work, the big question is how it will be funded?

What do our members think? Do we need R&D for seed production? How do we go about funding it?

@IreneSu00844470 @mitchellpots If they are "thrown out" after washing they will most likely go to another use - maybe peeling or processing or at very worst stock feed.

@PreBasicGrowers @mitchellpots I did wonder about the piles of throw outs when they’re washed, where will they go? I think they will have to at least brush them.

@Spaldingprop @AHDB_Potatoes @potatoes4school Surely we want to connect children with their food - especially food that we grow in this country. The idea is that they enjoy growing and eating their home produced potatoes, then they eat more potatoes.

@AHDB_Potatoes @potatoes4school Missing the whole commercial point as usual. The excitement should be that some of the 459,000 might eat potato for lunch and give the market a glimmer of hope. If they all grow their own what’s the point in growers producing them?

@mitchellpots @IreneSu00844470 I doubt the shelf life will be any longer, but they'll be less appealing and more likely wasted and repeat purchase will be reduced.

@IreneSu00844470 Well I guess the shelf life will be longer by about 2 to 4 weeks longer than washed potatoes depending on how the house holder stores them
