I wrote an open access paper about the hinges found at Sutton Hoo. In the Early Medieval period, hinges are usually simple, and utilitarian. In Mound 1, the hinges are complex, and playful. 'An Assessment of the Hinges from Sutton Hoo, Mound 1' - digital.kenyon.edu/perejournal/vo…

#Roman copper-alloy cylindrical padlock. The interior mechanism was iron and is now too badly corroded to identify. The lock plate is a thin, circular plate which attaches over the open end of the housing to seal in the locking mechanism. #YorkRomans #archaeology

@DrStruthers You too. The talk was really good - everyone was very engaged. I don't know how I ended up with a seat at the front!

@wargamesodyssey @SirGrentch @EquipmentRoman @britishmuseum 'Copper alloy' is used by archaeologists because very few objects are 'true' zinc brasses or tin bronzes. Zinc, tin and lead are found in varying combinations in copper alloys. Groups of similar objects can have surprising variations.

The copper-alloy Coolus-type helmet from the Walbrook in London, possibly dating to the earliest Roman military occupation of the site. Now in @britishmuseum. For an analysis of the helmet see Kaminski and Sim's LAMAS paper: tinyurl.com/5bnf6ajx

@ThomasSmaberg I just feel like each generation should get to decide which hat is the best. And how many centuries has it been since we actually counted the cows? There aren't *any* in the Buckingham Palace enclosure.

@ThomasSmaberg I think you need a bunch of under-kings to decide that you're the over-king, based on a number of factors including how many cows you have, and how impressive your hat looks on the battlefield.
