If a grad program or research group is not preparing students for careers beyond academia, then what is happening is likely not mentoring. Mentoring is about helping someone achieve their career goals, not replicate ours.

After 2 years of being exceedingly careful I have finally succumbed to COVID. Tested + with symptoms on last day of a week long international conference where almost no one masked. I was masked most of (but not all of) the time. 12 hour drive home sucks when feeling like crap.

In class today I gave the usual argument (involving drawing a bridge between two closed contours) to justify why the integral of f stays the same when we deform one contour into another through a region where f is analytic. My student Sylvan found a neat alternative argument!
