I've received a flood of heartfelt inquiries about @VDHanson, and respond on my own accord, being clear that I'm not relaying official news about Victor, as I've not been deputized to say anything or to offer an update. However, I will say that what Victor endured this past Tuesday was indeed quite major surgery, and with that comes serious post-op procedures, tests, etc. That is ongoing. Whether or not the surgery has proven successful (which is the objective of the avalanche of prayers that have already come Victor's way -- of which he is very aware and deeply moved) is still to be determined, and such news Victor will share at his discretion. That said, if you are amenable to continued prayers for Victor as he recovers, then please do offer them. God bless and Happy New Year.

This obviously speaks to me as a music historian. We can preserve (if we will) our literature and architecture in tangible form, but music is ephemeral and requires re-creation. Early Music ensembles keep us grounded in the history and aesthetics of a time and place.

Ofc bringing this expertise together requires reliable networks, taste, practical knowledge of the repertoire, talents & stage. @ContinuoFndn plays a key role here, granting British ppl the opportunity to experience the passion & creativity of early music. thecritic.co.uk/lets-hear-it-f…

An interesting survey of the history of Halloween and its hollowing out. “Today, Western civilization is dying because we no longer ‘play’ at culture; lacking the generative powers of play, cultural forms and institutions are capable only of decadent repetition.” firstthings.com/the-death-of-h…

What an absolutely wild week, what a rush of emotions. I’m not an academic, I didn’t do well in school. I had no interest in the life of the mind until my conversion to Christ from C.S. Lewis, and from that I started reading voraciously on my own. As a regular common sense kind of guy it became so obvious to me that the SAT and the College Board was the main source of the crisis in education. I always wondered why a real academic didn’t see it and start an alternative decades ago. If you change the ultimate exam, you inherently change education. But I identify as Frodo in the CLT story, totally average, with the ability to bring very little to the table other than trying to maximize the involvement of truly exceptional people. Miraculously and providentially they came, I couldn’t even get a job at CLT if I didn’t start it. We have a young and energetic team, many of whom were homeschooled and went to college at places like Hillsdale. It’s already so much bigger than I ever could’ve imagined and I have no doubt MMXL will happen. PS: if you’re wondering what’s up with the 1920s attire, we weren’t just celebrating CLT‘s 10th anniversary, we were throwing a retirement party for the College Board. They have had a good run over the past 100 years. We will take it from here.

Stift Kloster Neuburg outside of Vienna. Cloister garden is laid out in medieval pattern as the herbs for medication and cooking would’ve been grown. Also a beautiful dwarf delphinium in the courtyard leaving the monastery. This is the monastery with the famous Verdun Altar.

Chimney cakes are huge in Budapest. This shop on Váci St. is my grandkids' favorite one, so now I want to stop in whenever I'm in town.

Music unfolds in time. It requires patience. And critically, it requires memory because all musical events, once sounded, disappear into the ether. Repetition is the key. professorcarol.com/2025/04/15/rep…
