Scientists once demonstrated the single greatest reason humans fail. They used a fish.
They put a pike and small prey fish in the same tank, separated by a glass barrier. The pike was built to hunt. Born to win. It attacked immediately.
And hit the glass.
It tried again. And again. And again. Every instinct in its body telling it to go. Every attempt ending the same way. Until one day, it stopped. Not because it gave up. Because it learned. The world had a wall in it, and the wall always won.
Then the scientists removed the barrier.
The pike didn't move. The prey swam right past it. Close enough to touch. The pike just watched. It had rewritten its understanding of reality around a piece of glass that no longer existed.
It starved to death surrounded by food.
This is pike syndrome. And most of us live with it. An old rejection that taught you not to shoot your shot. A failed business that taught you you're not an entrepreneur. A relationship that taught you not to open up. The glass is gone. Has been for years. But you're still pulling your punches for a wall that isn't there.
Moral of this story: Just try. Try and try. Never stop.
