5/6 The takeaway is clear: The risk of tick-borne illnesses is growing, co-infections are becoming more common, and both doctors and the public need to stay alert—because with ticks, what you can’t see can absolutely make you sick. Check out the science: eurekalert.org/news-releases/…

🧵 1/6 A new study shows that ticks aren’t just spreading one disease—they’re increasingly carrying multiple at the same time. Researchers tested more than 2,000 blacklegged ticks collected over 9 years in the Northeast & found that about 1 in 10 carried at least 2 pathogens.

3/4 Even more promising, the team was able to test drug compounds that block the parasite and stop the babesia infection from growing. As one researcher put it: “We have now druggable targets in babesia parasites. This creates a clear path toward better therapies.”

🧵 1/4 Transmitted by the same ticks that carry Lyme disease, babesiosis is rapidly expanding, especially across the Northeast. It infects red blood cells and poses a great risk for the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
