Nova was just the third-best team in a very weak Big East this season, and they come in on poor form after a loss to a struggling Georgetown team in the conference tournament. They’re also without key rotation piece Matt Hodge, who tore his ACL, thinning out an already limited roster. This isn’t the Villanova team people are used to seeing in March, both in terms of talent and the level of competition they faced all year. Utah State, on the other hand, checks a lot of boxes for a dangerous tournament team, ranking 16th in ORTG and 71st in DRTG, strong marks for a non-major. They were the class of the Mountain West all season, won the conference tournament, and have proven they can beat quality teams with a win over VCU. With the better form, stronger profile, and a favorable setup, laying a short number here with Utah State is the side.

SMU started the season strong but has fallen off lately, especially with the uncertainty around BJ Edwards, who is dealing with injury and won’t be close to 100% even if he suits up. What separates Miami (OH) from typical mid-majors is their elite offense, ranking 2nd in the nation in points per game, 1st in field goal percentage, and top 25 from three, giving them the firepower to hang with anyone. As long as they can hold their own defensively and limit Boopie Miller’s ability to penetrate, this sets up as a game they can keep close throughout. Getting 7.5 in what’s essentially a home environment is too much value to pass up.
