Being able to run a frontier AI model on your own hardware means token costs are effectively free.

The economic downturn which is coming (and already started to happen) is going to be devastating and worse then any other in the past 50 years. Each and every industry is going to feel it.
What you are seeing in VR right now is not isolated instance or just a problem of one company - it is a systematic shake up.
Companies which rely on investors money will suffer a lot and many will end their existence because money are drying out very quickly.
Companies and investors are slowing down and cost of borrowing money is growing rapidly, therefore investment risk appetite is shrinking.
Unfortunately we will see many more bankruptcies and reorganizations.
