An Athens teenager indicted on a terrorism charge after authorities said he conspired with extremist groups to kill students and staff at Athens High School last summer has applied for youthful offender status, according to court records. Carson Albert Butler, 18, also faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. Jail records show he is being held in the Limestone County Jail without bond. All five charges are Class A felonies. Athens police said Butler has been in custody since June after the FBI alerted the department to his alleged intentions. He was indicted in November. Court records show Butler filed his application for youthful offender status on April 2 and Circuit Judge Chadwick Wise set a hearing for June 3. Wise appointed Decatur attorney Brian White to represent him. The indictment alleges Butler acted “with the intent to commit the crime of murder” and took an overt act toward carrying it out. He is accused of conspiring with groups including 764, MKU, also called Maniac Murder Cult, and No Lives Matter while allegedly targeting 11 people at Athens High School. The FBI has described 764 as “modern-day terrorism.” The Justice Department has classified it as a terror network, saying its members use social media to share extreme gore and child sexual abuse material and to extort and blackmail vulnerable teenagers.
