A russian drone carrying explosives, involved in the bombing of infrastructure in Ukraine crashed in Galați, Romania, causing a fire on the roof of a residential apartment building. Two persons sustained minor injuries and several residents required medical attention, the building was evacuated. Two aircraft and a helicopter belonging to the Romanian Air Force were scrambled when Russian drones appeared on the radar, they had permission to shoot. This incident represents a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation. Romania will take the necessary diplomatic response measures regarding this serious violation of international law and of its airspace. Romania has informed European member states, the Allies and the NATO Secretary General of the circumstances and has requested measures to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to Romania. The Russian Federation bears direct responsibility for these grave and irresponsible actions. Romania will act with the utmost determination to increase international pressure on the Russian Federation with a view to achieving an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. Foto: IGSU

As the US-Iran war dies down, it’s worth checking how U.S. intelligence bodies (CIA and NIC) had predicted the outcome of the war. Below is what they said right before the war began on Feb. 28: * Intervention was not likely to lead to regime change in the Islamic Republic. * Even if Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the operation, he could be replaced by hardline figures from the Revolutionary Guard. * Neither limited airstrikes nor a larger, prolonged military campaign would be likely to result in a new government taking over in Iran. * Iran’s clerical and military establishment would respond to the killing of Khamenei by following protocols designed to preserve continuity of power. * The prospect of Iran’s fragmented opposition taking control of the country was “unlikely.” (sources: WP, AP, Reuters)

The issue with Russian assymetric (uncontrolled) escalation: it's a madman playbook, designed to provoke retreat (cf Thomas Schelling). That does not make the threat illusionary (24/02/22, anyone?). The danger is a) Ukraine ain't playing ball and b) Moscow dangerously close to losing control of its red lines

Russia again threatens diplomats & foreigners, urging us to leave Kyiv. But we are not going anywhere! Russia wants fear. Panic. Isolation of Ukraine. It will not work. 🇪🇺 is not going anywhere. We stay in Kyiv. We stay w/ Ukraine. 🇺🇦🤝🇪🇺
