@PetreRaleigh But the people who are mad about it ALSO want to get rid of broad liberal arts gen-ed programming. Our business school has been fighting to let their own faculty teach math, foreign languages, etc., so they get to control curriculum and funding rather than other departments.

This isn't to say it's not desirable for research to circulate outside university settings, of course it is, but the basic theory of academia is that your highly specialized research will shape and inflect the big survey class you teach to hundreds of nonmajors a year

Conversations about how academic research only produces obscurantist tracts for specialists are always odd to me because they almost never mention the primary vector by which research reaches nonspecialists, which is of course the classroom

@PetreRaleigh But conversely, SO MANY people don't use Google to answer simple questions that they SHOULD use it for. Half of the subreddits I follow are full of people just posting the same simple, basic, Google-able questions over and over and if they just searched, it's the first answer!

I do think one underrated point of entry for ChatGPT was students' pre-existing and maddening habit of Googling stuff that is very clearly in their course materials because they just don't want to engage with those at all

@PetreRaleigh In my experience, it's NEVER "I want an orange Coke" or whatever, it's more: "What can I get you to drink, sweetie?" "I'll have a coke." "What kind?" "[Coca-cola/Pepsi cola/Dr Pepper/whatever]" Genericized trademarks are not unique to the South!

When I was in elementary school and found out about the "coke" people I was so mad. Asking my classmate from the South "but what if you want like an orange pop?" and he's like "we would say orange Coke." Gibberish. Absurd

So uh… they’re evacuating an entire section of Knoxville (incl. my GF’s apt) because somebody cut open a box with a propane torch at a recycling center and it’s apparently full of 200+ sticks of dynamite and is smoking and near some oxygen and deisel tanks???

@eileen_lepetit But funnily enough, in Appalachia and the South it’s a traditional food! (The young leaves and stems are not poisonous, and can be boiled and cooked down with vinegar and pepper and ham/salt pork, in a dish called “poke sallet” or “poke salad.”

So apparently this is pokeweed, a poisonous plant. An article in The NY Times calls it “the vegetarian’s puffer fish.” The fact that I cut some and put it in a vase with some dead hydrangeas - for reasons of ghoulishness - appears unwise.
