The live-fire exercises in the Sinai Peninsula, led by the Third Field Army, involved real ammunition and were carried out close to the border fence, in some areas about 100 meters away. The activity was approved under the 1979 peace treaty. Israeli border communities and security officials expressed concern that the noise could conceal smuggling or other security activity.
