Burnout in youth wrestling comes from cutting weight, and parents emphasis on winning. Not practice..

Far too many parents I chat with are concerned about burnout. If your son/daughter loves wrestling, and wants to compete in college one day, and even be a “famous” wrestler, then training 3X a week & lifting 3X a week is not going to burn them out. Remember: They want this! Build in some days off and weekends off…pour rocket-fuel on their skill-level with some intense weekend training-camps, and implement a little common sense. That’s all that’s needed. Far more kids under-train, under-work, and enter the arena under-skilled and under-prepared than do burn out. Under-training and RUNNING OUT OF TIME is the real issue you need to be afraid of.

Prior to complaining to your child’s coach about playing ask yourself 4 questions:
1 Does my child attend ALL practices?
2 Does my child spend xtra hrs on their game?
3 Has my child performed when given the chance?
4 Does my child want it as bad as I do?

Most underrated aspect of coaching is ENERGY. I’m tired after a great practice. You have to bring energy and effort to the room to get the best out of your athletes. You go through the motions, so do they. It’s a lot harder this way but most things worth having usually are.

A friend and college coach once told me when asked about what he wanted out of wrestling for his kid something I’ll never forget. My kids were very young. He said, “I want my son to want to go to the NCAA’s with me when he’s 25.” One of the most impactful statements on me.
