I had other things I wanted to do today but someone had to do it: A paragraph-by-paragraph takedown of why basically everything in this op-ed is wrong. Kind of shocking how bad it is (starting with using "messy" to refer to hundreds of thousands of deaths)

🚨New NBER WP (with @myklebest and Valdemar Neto). We study a quasi-experimental expansion of the world’s largest cash transfer program for the extreme poor. A striking result: extra cash increased employment by about 5%, rather than reducing it. It also improved health. 1/3

Paul Mohnen showing that Social Security paid for itself by favoring better job matches geographically. Very counterintuitive at first but utterly prior-shattering @Masonomics

let's use these new Nature papers (cos.io/score) to see if economics is doing better than other social science on reproducibility. Many economists thought they were—and I was assured that they're smarter than most social scientists—so let's see if they were right.

I have lots of thoughts and I don’t necessarily disagree (I mean sloppy code, replication issues etc. are stuff I complain about all the time), but I think Econ does come out ahead of other SSs But the level is not a good things, lots of heterogeneity and I think it’s getting worse

I see some economists are jumping to claims of econ supremacy in empirical work from one especially audacious example of a superspreader of bad research. Fwiw when we actually look at replication, bugs in code, or power, empirical econ looks a lot like psych or quant polisci.

Tinder's impact on college students: + sharp, persistent increase in sexual activity = no impact on long-term relationships + higher dating outcome inequality - more sexual assault and STDs + may have improved female mental health aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

A tight link between productivity and population density is one of the most robust associations in urban economics. In that light, Scandinavia’s economic transformation before World War I is remarkable, since it occurred in some of Europe’s least densely populated regions.

Candidates get more support by moving to the middle of voters' ideological spectrum, but that may not mean the middle among elites. Democrats benefit by moderating most where the public is more conservative, Republicans where the public is more liberal osf.io/preprints/soca…
