In my hand, the coffee’s obsidian elixir pulsed with a calming warmth, its vapors a symphony of dark roast, hearth-embers, and sacred smokiness. Dawn unfurls over these primordial Appalachians with divine ferocity…torrents of molten rose and imperial amethyst drenching this hollow in a luminous benediction. The river surges, a silk ribbon of molten quicksilver murmuring against moss covered stones, while the silken mist carries the perfume of resinous pine and loamy, breathing earth. At the tree line, a brilliant scarlet cardinal weaves a tapestry of flute-like carols; above, a hawk wheels in meditative silence, his wild cry a benediction against the vault of the firmament. The 51° dawn chill envelops me with electric clarity until the first sip of coffee blooms like liquid revelation…bold, velvet, and present. In this temple of mist and mountain, the world’s poetry is inscribed in every trill of song and photon of light. As Seneca reminds us… “True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing.” I am grateful beyond measure for these hallowed hills.
